A STORY OF CONTRASTS

Healthy Living Guru Jack LaLanne Died January 23, 2011

This is a story of contrasts; Jack LaLanne and my mother.

Jack LaLanne has been a leading advocate of healthy exercise and diet all my life. Here is a bit about LaLanne’s diet in his own words:

“I was a strict vegetarian. In those days they thought that in order to build muscle you had to have meat. So I ate meat for a while. Now I only eat fish. I get all my protein from fish and egg whites.

I use no milk of any kind. Anything that comes from a cow I don’t eat.

“I take about 40 or 50 supplimets a day. Everything from A to Z. Ninety percent of them are natural, as much as I can take. I take enzymes, I take herbs, the whole bit!

“I’d rather see you drink a glass of wine than a glass of milk. So many people drink Coca-Cola and all these soft drinks with sugar. Some of these drinks have 8 or 9 teaspoons of sugar in them.

“What’s the good of living if you can’t have the things that give a little enjoyment? I never drink wine unless I am eating though. I take it with my meal. I drink 6 or seven glasses of water a day. I also drink vegetable juice. And I have at least 5 or 6 pieces of fresh fruit everyday and 10 raw vegetables.”

Mr. LaLanne died Sunday at age 96

My mother was a complete contrast. She ate a great deal of cream, butter and eggs. She ate potatoes, rice and pasta. My mother ate and cooked with lard until she was nearly 40 then she switched to Crisco. At home we had beef, pork or chicken two or three times a day. (I still have one of those at least once a day.) Mother baked pie, cake, cookies, brownies, puddings and fried donuts. We always had sweets around.

Mother died a few years age. She was 96.

HOW TO CREATE JOBS

Refuel The Great American Engine With Liberty In 52 Words

President Obama gives his State of the Union Address this (Tuesday) Evening. Reports say he will focus on jobs. Count on it —take it to the bank— everything the President proposes will work against free market job creation. This is my chance to say the right things in a fraction of the words (time) it will take the President to say the wrong things.

How To Create Jobs, By Richard Johnson

  1. Massive tort reform.
  2. Eliminate EPA functions except for air and water quality safeguards.
  3. Reduce corporate and capital gains tax rates; eliminate death tax.
  4. Reinstate pro-growth fiscal and monetary policies—especially massively reduce federal spending.
  5. Eliminate all federal disincentives for development of America’s oil, gas, and coal industries. Drill here; drill now; hang on!

Lincoln proclaimed “a new birth of freedom.” Ronald Reagan saw America as a “Shining City on a Hill.” My living memory goes back to Franklin Roosevelt. I have lived and breathed Liberty. I can smell it. America, with Lady Liberty in New York harbor, is surely the light of hope for billions under the yoke of tyranny.

Well no, things have changed. America is not the most free economy in the world; not even close. We’ve been in a slide for more than 20 years. In the past four years, we have seen a steeper decline. The Heritage Foundation’s 2011 Index of Economic Freedom reveals America dropped to ninth place among nations qand out of the top “free” category altogether. We now reside with the “mostly free” —Qatar, for example.

It is true this index only measures economic freedom. But the subject here is jobs. What is the answer to the coming Obama union thug payoffs and community organizing payoffs and AARP payoffs and General Electric payoffs and (you finish the list)? The answer is five government actions in 52 words to refuel the great American engine with Liberty.

THE LEFT GONE WILD: STAGE II

Pushing Society Into Crisis and Economic Collapse

Radical leftist Frances Fox Piven has complained Glenn Beck incited threats of violence against her according to the New York Times. Piven, a self described Socialist and Marxist, is in her sixth decade working to bring down American Liberty. Further, says the Times, a “liberal nonprofit group,” the Center for Constitutional Rights, has asked the President of Fox News to muzzle Beck.

John Hinderaker wrote about the incident in a post you cannot miss. You see the Left has a broad strategy to “prepare the battlefield” for the coming months and years by shutting down conservative communication. The wild vicious false charges after the Tucson massacre, was part of stage I which is still in operation. The Piven ploy launches stage II. Here, in part is what Hinderaker wrote Saturday:

The Left’s attempt to link the Tucson shootings to angry rhetoric (not theirs, of course) was stage one of a broader strategy —what both military men and political strategists refer to as preparing the battlefield. The movement to feign nonpartisanship at the State of the Union address by seating Republicans and Democrats together is another aspect of this stage. At the same time, the Left is moving on to stage two —an effort to cash in on battlefield preparation by attacking specific figures on the right and trying to shut down speech that the Left finds inconvenient.

At the moment, the second most-read article at the New York Times site is this one: “Spotlight From Glenn Beck Brings a CUNY Professor Threats.”

On his daily radio and television shows, Glenn Beck has elevated once-obscure conservative thinkers onto best-seller lists. Recently, he has elevated a 78-year-old liberal academic to celebrity of a different sort, in a way that some say is endangering her life.

Frances Fox Piven, a City University of New York professor, has been a primary character in Mr. Beck’s warnings about a progressive take-down of America. Ms. Piven, Mr. Beck says, is responsible for a plan to “intentionally collapse our economic system.”

Let’s pause there for a moment. First of all, Ms. Piven is not a “liberal academic.” By her own description, she is a radical, a leftist and a Marxist. Nor is she merely an academic; she has been a far-left activist for decades. The Times continues:

Never mind that Ms. Piven’s radical plan to help poor people was published 45 years ago, when Mr. Beck was a toddler. Anonymous visitors to his Web site have called for her death, and some, she said, have contacted her directly via e-mail.

In response, a liberal nonprofit group, the Center for Constitutional Rights, wrote to the chairman of Fox News, Roger Ailes, on Thursday to ask him to put a stop to Mr. Beck’s “false accusations” about Ms. Piven.

“Mr. Beck is putting Professor Piven in actual physical danger of a violent response,” the group wrote. …”

Read it all HERE.

Hinderaker’s post is critical. You’ll get the balance of the Times shameful job and an excellent analysis from John. Do not miss it at Power Line. If you are not familiar with The Cloward-Piven Strategy of Orchestrated Crisis (or even if you are), get a short primer from a September 28, 2008 American Thinker article by James Simpson. This is what America should have known two and a half years ago. You must know it now. You will find it is difficult to overstate the revolutionary Marxist mindset of these people and the current application. We must know what we are facing. David Horowitz summarizes the strategy thusly:

The strategy of forcing political change through orchestrated crisis. The “Cloward-Piven Strategy” seeks to hasten the fall of capitalism by overloading the government bureaucracy with a flood of impossible demands, thus pushing society into crisis and economic collapse.”

(The Center for Constitutional Rights, “is dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. . . . CCR . . . is committed to the creative use of law as a positive force for social change.”) Understand the battle plan?

Finally, Glenn Beck (similar to other high profile Conservative communicators) has 15 active death threats at any one time.

RUNNING A RACE AGAINST TIME

Targeting Spending and Drawing a Bead on the National Debt!

The 173 member Republican Study Committee which, is the caucus of House conservatives, rolled out a plan Thursday to cut government spending by 2.5 trillion. This is huge! The plan does not include entitlement reform —only discretionary spending. Here is a NEWSMAX story by David A. Patten:

GOP Attempts Historic $2.5 Trillion Cut in Federal Spending

Buoyed by their successful vote to repeal healthcare reform, conservative House Republicans on Thursday rolled out plans for a massive, $2.5 trillion cut in federal spending over the next 10 years.

The proposal, to be contained in the Spending Reduction Act of 2011, would reset non-security discretionary spending to 2008 levels, affecting everything from state stimulus money to federal involvement in mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, to foreign aid, education, transportation, scientific research and over 100 other federal programs.

“Whether Americans realize it or not, we are all running together in a race against time. Unless Washington takes swift action to cut spending, we will chain our children to debt and rob them of the opportunity to reach for the American Dream,” declared Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Rep. Scott Garrett, R-N.J. in an op-ed published in the Washington Examiner Wednesday.

Jordan, the chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, unveiled the budget-austerity package on Thursday at the conservative, D.C.-based Heritage Foundation think tank.

House Minority Leader Eric Cantor pledged the RSC proposals will be allowed to come up for an up-or-down vote on the floor of the House.

REPEAL: A ROCKET-LIKE LIFTOFF

The 26 month Repeal and Replace of Obamacare Began Wednesday With a Blast Off!

The United States House of Representative voted overwhelmingly, 245 to 189 (a 56 vote margin!) to repeal Obamacare Wednesday. Incredibly, every Republican voted to repeal. Only three Democrats —Dan Boren (D-Okla.), Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.), and Mike Ross (D-Ark.)— voted for Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act. Jeffrey Anderson, at the Weekly Standard, (hat tip Scott Johnson) considers the meaning of the House vote:

Reflecting the clear and strongly held views of the vast majority of Americans, the House has voted overwhelmingly to repeal ObamaCare.

Last March, the House voted to pass ObamaCare by a tally of 219 to 212 — a margin of 7 votes; today it voted to repeal ObamaCare by a tally of 245 to 189 — a margin of 56 votes. Ten months ago, the vote was 51 percent to 49 percent — a margin of 2 percentage points; today it was 56 percent to 44 percent — a margin of 12 percentage points. So the margin for repeal was 49 votes and 10 percentage points bigger than the margin for passage.

Many have described this as being merely a symbolic vote. But, in truth, the 112th House will never pass a more important bill. It seems quite strange, moreover, that anyone would ever call legislation to repeal a 2,700-page law, which also happens to be the President’s centerpiece initiative, anything other than substantive.

Now the repeal bill will advance to the Democratic Senate, where senators will have the chance to respond to the people’s will by voting yes, voting no, or refusing even to hold a vote. Their choice, too, will be substantive — and will say a lot about the current composition of that body.

But before transferring our thoughts too much to the Senate, let us take a moment to appreciate what has happened today in the House: Less than ten months after ObamaCare’s passage, the repeal movement has notched its first legislative victory!

Moreover, this victory will give Republicans momentum. In the days and weeks to come, they will work to defund ObamaCare. They will conduct oversight hearings on such matters as the Obama administration’s misuse of taxpayer money to promote ObamaCare. And, most of all, they will advance serious Republican alternatives to this unprecented threat to limited government, fiscal solvency, and liberty. In short, Republicans have voted to repeal perhaps the most contentious legislation in generations. They will now showcase the sorts of real reform that should take its place.

This vote should be a major 2012 election issue for many of the 189 Democrats. For example, that vote will be very unpopular with voters in two of the four House districts (first and seventh) held by Democrats in Minnesota. Now, on to the US Senate where Senator Reid, has declared he will not schedule a vote. If the Senate does not vote, every Democrats whose term is up in 2010 should be assumed to be against repeal.

REPEAL OBAMACARE HOUSE VOTE TODAY

The journey of 26 Months Begins With This Vote

The House of Representatives is set to vote on the repeal of Obamacare today, January 19, 2011. Obamacare threatens to increase costs for American businesses by billions. Here are some facts (from Repeal it Now):

  • The Obama administration has threatened companies who dare to blame Obamacare’s new regulations and taxes as a reason for their higher operating costs.
  • The law is so toxic that even several Democrats introduced legislation in 2010 to repeal part of the bill.
  • Health care premium costs are going up under Obamacare, even though President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid all claimed that would not happen.
  • Citing high costs and the potential for employees to lose their health coverage, the Obama administration has already issued hundreds of companies waivers to be exempt from certain provisions in Obamacare.

Obamacare adds 159 new agencies, offices, and commissions to an already bloated federal government (Get the entire 159 PDF chart at the Center for Health Transformation Here):

BESMERCHING MARTIN LUTHER KING BY BESMERCHING GEORGE WASHINGTON

Let Us Be Thankful Only 1200 Showed Up.

The South Carolina NAACP must be led by Jim Clyburn’s crowd. So my expectations are low. Still, they found another way at Monday’s Martin Luther King Day celebration to reduce themselves more. Take a look:

In reaction, Pamela Geller does one of her finest, Boxing George. Do not miss it. Go now.

I know. You’re welcome.

DR. JOSEPH LOWERY GONE WILD FEBRUARY 7, 2006

From the Pulpit at the Coretta Scott King “Funeral”

For the left, the death of someone seems always to be a political opportunity and dignity is always one of the casualties.

Here is a perfect example on someone who worked shoulder to shoulder with Dr. King to end racial discrimination in America and then went on to  a career hustling race using Uncle Sam as the vehicle to steal from millions of Americans and use the money to make millions of Americans permanent wards of the state.

Here, Lowery whips up the mourners in a political rally against the policies of President Bush who, with Mrs. Bush, was in attendance. So another attempt was made to belittle a man of character. By God’s law, the result is always to expose the smallness of the speaker and those who respond.

JUDGING BY THE CONTENT OF THEIR CHARACTER

January 17, 2011, Martin Luther King Day

Today is Martin Luther King Day, the first of 10 official National Holidays. It is not wrong to say it is to honor Dr. King. It is not wrong to say it is to celebrate Dr. King’s birthday. It is just shallow. To focus exclusively on Dr. King is to focus on a sinner like the rest of us. To make a day to honor black Americans would be contrary to the goal of Dr. King.

Let us focus on his vision. These selections are from, in my opinion, one of his four most important speeches.

I HAVE A DREAM, August 23, 1963

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

“Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity. . .

Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood . . .

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. (emphasis mine)

I have a dream today. . . .

We can truly celebrate Martin Luther King Day by insisting on high character in our own personal conduct, in the work of our churches, in our businesses, in all those who claim to be bringing us the news and in all our elected officials and leaders.

When leaders like Senator Durbin or Congressman Clyburn demonstrates a deficiency of character, as they did last week, we should call them on it. When our media reporters, commentators, and anchors demonstrate a deficiency of character, as they did last week, we should call them on it. As we mark this MLK DAY, let us proclaim that on January 17, 2011, the issue in America is not the color of their skin. It is character!
